Mariborsko Pohorje, a low mountain range whose highest peak reaches 1347 meters, is truly something special, certainly to Maribor, Slovenia’s second largest city. You can reach the gondola that runs from the valley to the ski slopes by city bus.
Snow guns and careful grooming guarantee 100 days of skiing, and when temperatures remain low enough, the trails are snow-covered all the way to the valley. The area is lit for night skiing, and its illuminated five kilometres ski run is the longest in Europe.
Mariborsko Pohorje is famous for its traditional Golden Fox Trophy, the annual World Cup women’s alpine skiing competition held in early January. The ideal conditions made possible by the snow stadium, the outstanding organization, and the regular attendance of 25,000 fans, by far the largest audience for women’s skiing competitions, have contributed to the renown of this Slovene ski centre around the world.
Also held here are two World Cup snowboarding championships, a World Cup telemark competition, and an FIS World Youth Championship race.
