This green and diverse country lies at the crossroads of Europe, bordering Italy to the west, Austria to the north, Hungary to the east and Croatia to the south. Slovenia covers an area of 20,273 square km and has a population of approximately two million. The capital, Ljubljana, has a population of approximately 250,000. Having gained independence from the former Yugoslav Republic in 1991, Slovenia has established a stable democracy and has made an easy transition to a market economy. The country has successfully re-orientated its exports towards Western markets, its main trading partners being Germany, Italy, France and Austria.
